These are very nice simple filters that do a good job in low flow, low waste situations. Too high of a flow rate into the unit and it will overflow over the side because the lid is not pressurized. And as the Matala pads get clogged up with the debris, water will bypass the pads reducing their ability to filter. But if you don't try and push too much water through them and you don't have too much sludge that needs to be removed, then this filter will give great bio filtration. The UV upgrade makes it easy to add additional UV if you ever want to. The purchase price is very low which makes it a great choice for a lot of small DIY ponds and ideal for a quarantine filter. You can also use it as an add on filter to a larger pond.

I am very happy with my biosteps filter. i installed it behind my waterfall. There is a limit to the flow rate though and if you go through fast it will overflow a little bit as the media starts to get dirty. So I had to rig a bypass so only some of my water goes through it and that worked really well.

Very nice filter for the money. It can't handle really high flow rates, but I used it as an add on for additional filtration and I am very happy with it. As the water comes into my waterfall this sits off to the side and I have a bypass that send most the water into the falls, but about 20% goes through this first and then into the falls. Just a nice way to add a little extra media and since its at the end of my filter system, I almost never need to clean it. I don't have the version with the UV....just the matala media.

I added this filter as an add on to boost pond filtration and have been more then happy with it. It is easy to clean because it has a bottom drain, the matala mats are very durable and can be used for several seasons, and the filter doesn't slow down when it is dirty. I am moving and leaving my other filter but will take this one. I'm going to put it on my QT tank, I think it would be perfect for that.
Only cons I can see are that it is hard to hide because the return needs to be next to the pond and the inlets are for hoses, not flex pvc.

Rockin' little filter!! Easy to clean and not too expensive. Gave my 700 gallon goldfish/small koi pond excellent water. I think this would be great as an add on to an exisiting system or a stand alone filter for smaller ponds. Highly recommend the UV when you purchase it. I bought the UV a few months later and it was more expensive then if I had just bought it together with the filter.
