In the perfect pond matala mats have their place, I'm sure. But my experience with these and any other kinds of mats (specifically with my system) is that they clog too quickly and inhibit the waterflow or cause overflowing of my filters. So I had to stop using them.

My settlement chamber has a prefilter and I stuffed the prefilter basket with these. Works great and even when dirty they do not inhibit the flow. I haven't seen any wear on them...they may last forever. I also have some in my skimmer. They are bit messy to clean and dirty up real fast but I see that as a sign of efficiency; They're doing the job. Matala mats on the other hand tend to clog and inhibit the water flow, in my opinion.

A great little skimmer. It doesn't have anything fancy about it. Installed easily and does the job flawlessly. I really like the artificial rock cover. It's easily manipulated to fit into the DIY'ers system, which is a huge plus.

Good pump for the money. It is a tad noisy. I haven't needed to replace the diaphram after a year of constant use and it still looks like new. This summer however it began to have heat issues. It gets hot and shuts down. I have to unplug it and let it cool down before plugging it in again. But then it goes right back to work.

This pump is fantastic! I have put mine through the ringer this year. My filter pit flooded three times and the pump was submerged completely. With a simple drying out and oiling it went right back to work; never missing a beat. It's incredibly powerful yet easy on the electric bill. I would definately buy this pump again.
