These are much better when installed as a gravity flow into the filter and have the pump pull the water out the other end. But that makes them hard to install because they need to be in ground at water level. But once installed they are very effective filter. One unit cannot handle a very big fish load, but using 3 in a row and you will have an excellent filter. And these really aren't all that much more expensive then building a DIY three chamber vortex system yourself out of 55 gallon barrels, so save yourself the work and use these.

As with almost all small submersible filters, they are designed for small ponds with very few fish. Using them for high fish loads will require frequent cleaning, which unfortunately is not easily done since the filter is at the bottom of the pond and needs to be removed.

like most of these small pressurized filters, they are fine for small ponds. Cut the recommended number of gallons in half and you will have a properly sized filter. But if you are looking for a small DIY filter for a pond less then 1000 gallons and not too many fish, this one should work well for you. Its solid and can handle the outdoors pretty well. The backwash doesn't work great, so plan on opening it up every couple months for a good cleaning.

These are one of the few small filters that I actually like. The construction of the valve is a bit flimsy and expect to replace parts after a few seasons. But the overall design is very clever with the scrub bars to clean the sponges, the built in UV and the large section for media at the base. All for a very reasonable price. Also, the quick release adapters are smart and can be changed easily to fit flex hose or threaded PVC.

Very rugged little filter. You could drop this off a 3 story building and then go hook it up. Well maybe not, but you get the idea. It doesn't really filter any better then any other filter in its size and price range, but most filters in that price are made cheaply and have small plastic parts that can break after a few seasons outdoors.

A good little filter for what it is....a small goldfish and water garden filter. This unit is not meant to be a stand alone filter for koi ponds. It is one of the least expensive filters on the market, around $100, making it very popular at the local water garden shops. Easy to install with a submersible pump and some flex hose. The main problems are the single pad at the top for trapping debris, this will clog quickly and water will bypass and then muck and sludge start to clog the media. And the media is far too large and open, limiting its ability to provide surface area. But you can replace the media if you like and even switch out the pads for some superior Matala pads.

Not all that impressed with the smaller nexus "pod". It doesn't mechanically trap debris nearly as well as its big brothers the Nexus 210 and 310 units and it doesn't utilize the fluid bed technology like they do. The media remains static and air is only used to clean the media. For the cost there are superior small pond filters on the market. EA makes some amazing equipment, most of it groundbreaking and state of the art, I just think with this filter they tried to be something weren't.

The newest version of the Nexus Filters. I don't think the 200 and 300 are even available anymore. The Nexus 210 and the 310 are excellent units. The easiest to clean filter I have ever seen with an spectacular design for mechanical and biological filtration. The fluid bed technology is by far the best style of filter one can use on their pond and the Nexus utilizes this very nicely. The catch is that the unit is not going to be cheap, usually well over $2000 and also its pretty tricky to install. Most DIYers can't install it themselves and the height and level must be perfect for this to function properly. But if you are looking for the best, the Nexus definitely fits the bill.

These are very nice simple filters that do a good job in low flow, low waste situations. Too high of a flow rate into the unit and it will overflow over the side because the lid is not pressurized. And as the Matala pads get clogged up with the debris, water will bypass the pads reducing their ability to filter. But if you don't try and push too much water through them and you don't have too much sludge that needs to be removed, then this filter will give great bio filtration. The UV upgrade makes it easy to add additional UV if you ever want to. The purchase price is very low which makes it a great choice for a lot of small DIY ponds and ideal for a quarantine filter. You can also use it as an add on filter to a larger pond.

A truly brilliant mechanical filter. Completely clog free regardless of flow rate and amount of waste. Maybe if you had thousands of leaves in the pond it might get clogged, but I doubt it. Its amazingly simply but installation is a bit tricky. It needs to be gravity flow into the unit and the pump pulls out, so the placement of the unit needs to be perfect.

These are the most popular pressurized bead type filters in the pond industry. Mostly because of the solid construction and low price. They are very well made and I have seen these filters put through serious abuse over the years and still have trouble free operation. The only flaw is they don't backwash very well and a couple times a year you need to open them up and stir the media as muck and sludge will build up and cake along the bottom. After you stir it you need to give it a VERY long backwash.

The best thing about these filters is the media. They don't use a sinking media, its neutrally buoyant which means it will sink to the bottom during normal operation because the water flows down and then when you backwash the water flows up so the media rises up and tumbles very easily with no clumping of the media. Its also a very solidly built filter and will last outdoors for many years.

The flow is not great at higher head so if you have more then 10 feet of head I would get the larger of the models rather the the lower ones. That's why it works best when hooked into an existing solar system.

These are a must for any external pump that doesn't already have a built in leaf pot. You might be able to get away from using a leaf pot if you have two things. A) the pump must be below water level so the line always stays primed and B) there is some other form of mechanical filtration before the pump to keep leaves from getting into the impeller. For example if the pump pulls through a skimmer or settling chamber. And even still these only cost around $70 and you pump costs several hundred or more, its a good investment that will extend the life of your pump.

I sell a few of these. They work well for cats and dogs but a persistent raccoon will find a way to get past it. The wire cannot touch any surface, not even a blade of grass or a flower. This will trip the line and it will not work. Most ponds do have plants around them, making this a difficult item to use.

Great for the DIYer. Very easy to apply and gives a nice solid leak proof seal to most any cement surface. Surface preparation is a must. Very effective at sealing waterfalls and rocks. The back color means it virtually disappears under water. Will stick well to most any type of surface, including your skin and clothing. Be sure to wear old clothes and gloves. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because of the cost. It is far to expensive. A low cost alternative would be Great Stuff. It is virtually the exact same product only its a yellow color instead of black. Great Stuff can be found at Home depot or Lowes for about $3 a can vs the $12 to $15 a can for this product. However with Great Stuff, you have bright yellow foam that you now have to hide.

So for the money these are a much better deal. And thats not to say these are a bad tank either, they are quite good for sure.

I have been selling these nets for years. By far my best selling net. Not because they are such great nets, but because they are so much less expensive then some other high end nets out there, and they fit on a regular pool net handle that a lot of people already have. However when compared to some of the higher quality nets out there there is really no comparison. They are slow through the water and hard to manage. They are fine for small ponds, but if you have 4 feet or more, this nest will make it almost impossible to catch the koi. Really they deserve only 3 stars, but I gave 4 because of the low cost and how they are the only net in the industry to fit a pool handle.

It does have some effect on stressed koi and help them to recover from past water quality issues. For example if the pump died and the water quality was poor. Once you get the pump running again and the water quality is better, the koi might still be stressed and this would be a helpful tool.
