Kaldnes K3 media is similar in application to Kaldnes K1 media, in that the constant chaotic movement of the air from your pump causes the media to self-clean and thus requires no maintenance. K3 media is different than K1 media, as it is designed to be used in the retrofitting of existing filters bays as the slightly larger media size allow for easier configuration and control. The media is great, but the size is too big so the sq ft of surface area per cu ft of media is less then other types and much less then the K1. But I can see it working well for particular applications.

I like using this in filters that have larger opening to allow for high flow gravity returns. This media won't flow out and doesn't need to be as tightly contained. Lots of surface area and ideal home for new and old bacterial growth.

Really a great media. I love the bigger size because it doesn't slip out of the container and its easy to keep it in one place. Never clogs the outflow of the basin either. Lots of surface area too and very easy to clean. I have used many different types of filter media over the years as I have built and rebuilt and redesigned my filter system a few times. This media is really one of the best out there. I like the K1 too, but not in a situation where it can slip through the system and get into the pump or filter.
